Kojima Productions get a series entry that's wholly refreshing to what's come before, and Platinum get to showcase their trademark zest on a far greater stage through name association alone.Īnd what's surprising is how well the two distinct styles and worlds mesh. The Metal Gear brand has been championed in both. Platinum's titles are critically revered, but historically that acclaim never translates to sales. This back story, that Metal Gear Rising is now the child of two high-profile creative presences, and both known for two completely different approaches to their work, is what's so damn intriguing. Raiden had been upgraded from the one-note joke of Metal Gear Solid 2's surprise central protagonist into lighting-fast cyborg assassin extraordinaire for the franchise's fourth outing. Their calling card: fast-paced action adventures starring leather-clad witches, cybernetic war heroes, big on combos and twitch-gameplay. The studio's made up of ex-Capcom personnel critically-lauded for their work in the new outfit since its 2005 inception. Platinum Games have the answer in Raiden's case. But we like the thought of a game tied to one of the world's biggest franchises being offered in part-jest, part-exasperation, much like the drunken uncle at the party everyone's at their wits end in trying to straighten out. We favour the more colourful version however the handover offered over drinks and casual chat at a soirée attended by both Hideo Kojima and now-executive director Atsushi Inaba. The decision for the studio shift was in all actuality likely only after careful consideration by the Metal Gear creators.
